A short drive to Philadelphia, New York City, and Washington D.C., Delaware is an ideal getaway for many people trying to escape the hustle and bustle of large East Coast cities. Besides tax free shopping and green fees, The First State (Delaware was the first state to ratify the United States constitution) offers traveling golfers incredible beaches and a wide range of beautiful courses. Bethany Beach along Delaware’s shoreline has been named one of the country’s best secret beaches.
Wilmington Country Club (South) is one of the best private clubs in Delaware. The Robert Trent Jones design has played host to events such as the US Amateur, Mid-Am Championships, and the LPGA Championship on a regular basis. In 2008, Gil Hanse was brought in to update the course, and the result is a meticulously groomed and challenging layout suitable for all levels of golfers. The par 5 3rd is the signature hole, 585 yards of lovely scenery that plays down to a green defended by a big water hazard and bunkering on three sides.
Another beautiful and challenging course is Delaware’s first Jack Nicklaus Signature Course, Bayside Resort Golf Club, which is open to the public. The Golden Bear describes the course as, "a truly a memorable golf experience offering variety rarely found elsewhere." Right behind Bayside Resort Golf Club in difficulty is Baywood Greens, located in Long Neck it’s just minutes from the beaches. Pristinely maintained and riddled with water hazards Baywood Greens is as beautiful as it scary. With the new Duneside nine currently under construction the complex will extend to include 27 holes. While Bayside Resort Golf Club and Baywood Greens are fantastic courses located in close proximity to Delaware’s beaches, Back Creek Golf Club is located in Middletown, just a short drive away from the University of Delaware’s campus. A highly awarded course, Back Creek offers an enjoyable golf experience. Here rounds are complimented by friendly service and great food making it is easy to lose track of time and spend the whole day taking in everything Back Creek has to offer.
With great beaches and golf courses, Delaware is more than what meets the eye! Make sure to take the time and enjoy all the great (and tax free green fees) courses the First State has to offer.
