As the most densely populated state in the US, The Garden State is one with a huge choice of attractions including the Boardwalk at Atlantic City for those who like to gamble. It is often referred to as ‘the diner capital of the world’ as it has more diner-style eateries than anywhere in the world! With an NHL team and two NFL teams (although they are the New York Giants and Jets) there is a host of sporting and culinary delights to take in when you visit NJ!
There is a famous quartet of the finest private clubs in the US and along with Augusta, Cypress Point and Seminole, Pine Valley Golf Club is part of this. The course is a real test of golf with trees tightly framing the fairways and slick greens so you better bring your best golf when you play here! It is a difficult course to get on but if you get the chance it is an absolute must play!
Baltusrol Golf Club is a New Jersey institution and has been for over 120 years now. The 36-hole masterpiece that was created by A.W. Tillinghast and with renovations from Robert Trent Jones and Rees Jones is one of the most difficult tournament venues in the US. This is the only course to have hosted both the Men’s and Women’s US Open Championships on both of its courses. The list for major events hosted as Baltusrol is very long but its most recent was the 2016 PGA Championship won by Jimmy Walker.
In keeping with the traditional-style that Baltusrol and Pine Valley offer is Plainfield Country Club. Of the three mentioned so far this is the least known but it is by no means inferior. This Donald Ross course, that was modernised slightly by Gil Hanse, is one that requires clever and tactical tee shots if you want to enjoy yourself. A bad day from the tee will result in this becoming a tough slog! It is an understated affair with top-notch service provided by the staff at the club and it has hosted major events including the FedEx Cup Playoffs.
Finally, it would be amiss not to mention the golf course with arguably the most symbolically American vista in the world. Liberty National has wonderful panoramas of the iconic New York City skyline and from the par 3 14th you get a particularly special view of the Statue of Liberty, it would seem that the name of this course was no accident.
