North Carolina has it all, from gorgeous beaches like the Outer Banks to cities like Charlotte, rich with southern charm. The diverse landscape of North Carolina ranges from beaches along the Atlantic Ocean to Appalachian Mountains in the west, making the golf experience just as unique. North Carolina is also home to some of the best barbecue food in the world; here barbecue isn’t barbecue unless a whole hog is cooked over hard wood coals. NASCAR is big in this state too, with more than a couple stops on the NASCAR circuit in North Carolina and the Hall of Fame in Charlotte, people like their racing and it’s a part of the culture. Golf is too, Charlotte, Greensboro, Asheville, Raleigh-Durham and the Grand Strand border towns north of Myrtle Beach offer a remarkable menu of golf options.
Pinehurst is known as the Home of American golf, and for a good reason. Golfers have been spending vacations here since the 1890s. The Resort is a golf paradise, home to nine championship courses including the famed Pinehurst No. 2. The centerpiece of Pinehurst Resort, No. 2 remains one of the world’s most celebrated golf courses and has served as the site of more single golf championships than any course in America. Hailed by architect Donald Ross as, “the fairest test of championship golf I have ever designed”, the crowned, undulating greens, are some of the most complex and widely hailed in the world. Another best in the world and must play is Tobacco Road in Sanford. Their slogan, “highly decorated never duplicated” holds true, the course and experience of playing it is one of a kind. Seamlessly cut out of the natural landscape, architect Mike Strantz a pupil of Tom Fazio created a masterpiece. Just outside of Myrtle Beach but still in North Carolina is another one of a kind golf experience, The Big Cats Golf Courses of Ocean Ridge Plantation which is home to 90 holes of championship golf, yes five 18 hole championship courses. Another great spot is The Dormie Club and is also worth a look if you get the chance. This course is not only one of the better tracks in North Carolina but it is tough to find a better course anywhere in the states!
