Golf Courses in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania is best known for their Philly cheesesteak sandwich and the Rocky movies, however, its golf is another notable feature. The Keystone State is home to the much revered and often feared Oakmont Country Club, which is widely considered to be one of the toughest US Open venues. Host to more USGA and PGA championships than any other course in America, Oakmont is host of the 2016 US Open. The famous ‘church pew’ bunkers, the iconic hazard often pictured with this course, will test even the very best golfers in the world.

Pennsylvania has an incredible sense of pride and tradition; after all it is the home of the Amish community. There are few better examples in golf of this than the pins at Merion Golf Club. In a unique nod to tradition the pins at Merion are not topped with flags but baskets. Host of the 2013 US Open, won by Justin Rose, and the site of Bobby Jones’ Grand Slam completion in 1930, this is a course steeped in golf history and definitely one for the bucket-list.

As far as public courses go, Pennsylvania offers a wealth of fantastic tracks for any golfer. Totteridge Golf Course is a wonderful Rees Jones and Tom Tanto design that features quaint rolling hills which are reminiscent of English countryside courses. This beautiful course also has real estate that can be purchased for those who fall prey to its charm. The Nemacolin Woodlands Resort is another course with great character in Pennsylvania. Nemacolin is an incredible facility with a great academy and a championship course to match.

The Old Course at Bedford Springs is a traditionally laid-out course, fun for golfers of all skill levels and the colonial English-style hotel is beautiful. Another visually stunning and unique public course is Olde Stonewall Golf Club. A fairly new course, built in 1999, it is located in wooded land with plenty of water hazards lined with wonderful stonework making it as pleasing on the eye as it is fun to play.

One of the original Thirteen Colonies, Pennsylvania is a state riddled with traditions and its golf courses are no exception. This is a magnificent place to take in some golf, go out and get it.
