What to consider

Most waterproof jackets and trousers are made from Gore-Tex, the most effective waterproofing fabric. It uses a porous membrane between fabric layers or is laminated to a layer. This material is specifically designed to keep out liquid water while allowing water vapour and air to circulate.

Rainproof and showerproof jackets are usually made from a fabric that is treated with Teflon. This keeps water from penetrating for short periods, while also allowing air circulation. These jackets are slightly more lightweight and less expensive than waterproof jackets, and are ideal if playing in short showers.

Windproof jackets are usually not as expensive as either waterproof or rainproof gear, and are a good option for cold, windy weather rather than rain. They use materials which prevent the wind from passing through, while remaining breathable. Some windproof jackets are also treated with Teflon to offer a degree of water resistancy.

Jackets have a full length zip or a collar zip, or can be just slip-on. This will be down to your preference, as are the various features such as pockets, hoods, and adjustability.

Short-sleeved jackets are becoming more popular, particularly with players in warmer climates. They have sleeves that end at your elbow and are usually made from a thinner material. These jackets are usually rainproof or windproof rather than waterproof, but some long-sleeved jackets offer removable zipped sleeves. These are a good option if you want waterproofness with increased mobility.
